The Importance of Music

Nature, Sound Art, and Sacred by David Dunn is an article that explores the sounds in the world and the way in which we as individuals, and humans, interpret those sounds. Focusing on Part One: Assumption, Dun discusses that the reality of the world is made up of the way we hear and feel the vibration of our universe. He explains his hypothesis by explaining "All of the sound we hear is only a fraction of all the vibrating going on in our universe. What we do here is the result of a dance between the world and how we are made" (pg. 1). Dun then continues to explain that because each living creature is made differently they hear and feel vibrations differently and thus everyone has their own reality.

Regardless of the difference of our realities our eyes AND ears make up how we experience the world. He then goes on to state "I wonder if music might be our way of mapping reality through metaphors of sound as if it were a parallel way of thinking to the visually dominant metaphors of our speech and written symbols" (pg. 2). By this statement Dun expresses his view on the importance of sound and how we relate sound to the world around us.

In response to Part One: Assumptions, found in Nature, Sound Art, and Sacred, and the thoughts on reality and sound I believe, much like David Dunn, due to the way sound resonates with us as individuals DOES determine our realities - thus giving everyone a different reality. With this understanding of our reality and sounds known we are able to discuss music. Music, as Dunn explained, is another way of explain our reality other than visually. This understanding of music now creates a deeper and more meaningful voice to music and musicians.

Throughout the years music has been a way to connect people from all backgrounds. It gives people a voice to their feelings, they were unable to express. One extreme example of music bringing people together is of course Woodstock. Woodstock was a festival advertised as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music", and brought together people - *cough cough* hippies - who obviously resonated with peace and love.

To this day there are handfuls of festivals that cater towards and attract certain types of people, or dare I say another way of saying this would be 'here are handfuls of festivals that cater towards and attract people who share the same realities.'
